Voices from the Deep South:
the rise of Pāṭṭu song cultures
of South Asia
Grant agreement ID: 101201303

The project aims to offer an integrative and panoptic view of several related regional “singing” traditions and the cultural history of their interaction with literary genres by mapping their distribution, vehicles of transmission, cultural objects, and concepts against the background of early modern, missionary, and colonial initiatives to document them. Our Team will design and develop new tools, and an extensive digital archive of a selection of in-situ recorded songs, texts, images, maps, graphs, etc. built upon distant field-recordings of performances, interviews, rituals, and other events related to songs. These tools will be designed to make future engagement with the archive possible.
